potty training = lots of patience

Friday morning I decided to start potty training Alexis.  The other day I realized she will be 3 years old in just a little over 2 months and I really needed to get on this!  I had been putting it off for too long.  First thing in the morning, we started our normal routine of drinking milk and diaper changes.  I was getting ready to change Alexis's diaper but instead got the idea to just put her big girl underwear on.  I decided to take advantage of the fact that I was off work for 4 days straight and dedicate this time to finally doing it.  She was excited and so was I!  Needless to say, the excitement didn't last long as the first day was a big fail!  We both ended the day in tears.  Not one drop of pee ended up in the potty!  We sat in the bathroom together (each on our potties) for 20 minutes sometimes and nothing happened.  And less than 2 minutes later she would pee a river on the floor!  What was I doing wrong?

Yesterday was Day #2 and I was not very optimistic but I didn't let her know that.  She started out strong by peeing in the potty twice in a row first thing.  She got lots of treats and rewards and I thought things were going well.  The Halloween candy definitely came in handy!  As the day went on, she became less interested and more distracted with playing and with that came more accidents.  I was getting more and more frustrated and wondered if this was a lost cause.  I just wanted to quit.  I had no more patience.

Today is Day #3 and I was less than thrilled when I woke up thinking about what the day might be like.  I was tired of cleaning up messes and not getting anywhere.  But, I wasn't ready to give up yet.  Alexis woke up and was excited to put on her Hello Kitty underwear.  She talked about how she is a big girl now and Andrew is a baby because he wears diapers.  She surprised me by telling me that she had to go potty and ran into the bathroom..... and went!!  My attitude changed and I decided to do everything I could to make this work.  She continued to let me know when she had to go and by early afternoon, she hadn't had any accidents.  I was super attentive and watched her every move.  I didn't turn on the TV and tried to limit distractions.  I would have never believed it if someone were to tell me that she would go all day without an accident.... but that's what happened!

I am so proud of my big girl!!!
